Not Exactly!
by Nan Whybark
My chicken laid an egg once
As black as midnight sky.
I thought it’d hatch a beauty.
My pa was proud as pie!
I watched it so carefully!
When it began to crack,
Pa got the camera ready
And told me to stand back.
Then its little head appeared,
And then its tiny wings.
Pa and I were staring at
This precious newborn thing.
But when it started roaring,
Pa pretty near dropped dead!
I didn’t get a chicken.
A dragon hatched instead!

Moonlight Bowling
by Nan Whybark
Over southern England,
Fierce dragons flying in,
Set up in a circle
Some enormous stone pins.
They’re anxiously waiting
For their ball to appear.
Here comes the moon rising,
Golden yellow and clear!
Then across the dark sky,
Great dragons, all roaring,
Race toward the new moon,
Wings spread out and soaring.
One grabs up the moon, then
Working up to his stance,
Smoothly rolls the bright moon
With an aerial dance
At the stone silhouettes
So carefully set up.
Then the impact occurs!
The huge stone pins erupt!
The earth is trembling with
Stones falling and tumbling!
The dragons are cheering,
They’re roaring and rumbling!
The moon’s set in motion
Till the stones are all down,
Then they’re set up again
To bowl another round.
“What’s Stonehenge?” you ask me.
I can tell you all right!
It’s unfinished bowling
Of fierce dragons at night.

The Dragon That Swallowed Me Whole
by Nan Whybark
While reading my favorite kind of book,
The kind with dragons in them,
A dragon’s claw flashed out from the print
And pulled me deep within him.
And while I find it marvelous to
Study his innards so near,
I wish I would have brought the book
To read myself out of here!

Trick or Treat Dragon
by Nan Whybark
The doorbell is ringing.
I fling open the door
With a bowl full of treats,
Which I drop on the floor!
For there is a dragon
Roaring out, “Trick or treat!”
Instead of some children.
Looking timid and sweet.
He’s wickedly grinning.
His tongue is flickering.
He gulps down the candy
Still smiling and snickering.
Unfolding great wings,
He steps back a pace
And takes off to the east,
Soaring high into space.
But I hear him roar out
As he flies from the scene,
“Thanks so much for the treats,
“And Happy Halloween!”
My heart is still thumping
As he shadows the moon.
A trick or treat dragon?
Hope he's not back soon!
